The Internet has become a necessary utility, accessed daily by users across the globe. But how safe is the Internet that we rely on every day? To assess the safety, we introduced the concept of the NameSentry^SM Report. This report measures the relative concentration of abusive domain names in any given namespace, thus providing a comparative measure of safety.

Specifically, the report measures the number of abusive domain names per million Domains Under Management (DUM). Abusive domains are defined as those registered with the specific intent to engage in fraudulent and illegal activity such as phishing, malware, botnet command-and-control, and domains advertised via spam that result in harm to end-users, businesses and governments. The NameSentry^SM Report is not only used to measure and communicate how safe or unsafe a particular namespace may be, but also to benchmark the industry’s performance before and after the introduction of the new gTLDs.

To benchmark the relative safety of the world’s Top Level Domains, we published the first of the “NameSentry^SM Abuse Reports” in July of 2013. Since then we have continued to publish these reports three times a year, and provide an analysis of abuse metrics across generic Top Level Domains and Country Code Top Level Domains. We have been tracking this data via Architelos’ patent-pending NameSentry^SM abuse detection and mitigation service. NameSentry also mines additional data unique to each reported abuse.
The size of the TLDs are measured by DUM. The DUM numbers were taken directly from ccTLD registry websites, the ICANN website, and other research and analysis.
